If you’re wondering how to get started with Emergency Services (ES), then you’ve come to the right place. First off Search and Rescue Exercises (SAREX) are events where you will receive your ES training and will learn about how to become a member of a ground team, but making sure you complete everything in this quick tutorial will give you a great head start.
Civil Air Patrol’s ES personnel can receive a few different ratings. By earning these ratings, everyone can easily know what ES skill sets you possess.
- Ground Team Member (GTM): The ground team member training is split up into three levels GTM3, GTM2, GTM1, GTL. As a ground team member, you will learn how to move as a search team in heavily wooded areas, administer basic first aid, and strategize on how to effectively find your target.
- Urban Direction Finding (UDF): The UDF qualification is similar to the GTM ratings, but as an urban direction finding team member, you will be conducting your mission in a vehicle. This is a very basic rating to earn and is most useful in scenarios such as missing person searches.
- Mission Radio Operator (MRO): As an MRO, you are in charge of communications between search teams, aircraft, and the incident command post. Again, this is a simple rating to earn and having it makes you a valuable asset to the team.
